Swan Hill, Victoria Australia

Introduction - History - Attractions - Hotels and Accommodation - Sports and Recreation - River and Natural Attractions

Swan HillShowcasing the natural beauty of Australia's greatest river and surroundings.

With one of the most natural stretches of Murray river, Swan Hill allows visitors to witness the ebb and rise of the river, with no lochs or weirs to alter the flow for 120km either side. High river is usually during August and September, with high water mark often reaching the very top of the banks.

Just 20km north of Swan Hill lays the picturesque Vinifera and Nyah State Forest, following the Murray River. Canoe trees, cooking mounds, burial grounds and boundary markers can all be found in the leafy depths. Visitors can see a memorial to Japanese farmer Jo Takasuka, who pioneered rice farming in Australia. Both the forest and the foreshore of Lake Boga, with its sandy beaches, are popular summer camping areas.

Cruises are a popular way to experience the Murray river, and visitors are able to navigate the waterway on the century-old PS PYAP which departs from the Pioneer Settlement twice daily. A relaxing 1 hour luncheon cruise is provided on board the MV Kookaburra, departing 6 days a week from the Paddy Hogg Wharf at Murray Downs. For those determined to make it under their own steam, canoes can be hired at the swimming pool from November to April.

The giant Burke & WIills Tree, standing 30 metres high and 44 metres wide lies just down the street from the Giant Murray Cod - both of which make an excellent photo opportunity for visitors.

The region is a fisherman's paradise, with waterways including Lake Boga, and the Murray, Wakool, Edwards and Murrimbidgee rivers. The famous Murray Cod are still caught in the area, although anglers should check closed seasons and size restrictions.
Swan Hill region is situated close to northern Victoria's National parks; with Hattah-Kulkyne just 2 hours drive. Robinvale makes an ideal base for a trip to the spectacular Mungo National Park in New South Wales, less than 100km away, and easily accessible in a day trip.
