Swan HillSwan Hill was discovered in 1836, when Major Thomas Mitchell camped overnight on a rise near the river. The noisy honking ofswans prevented him from sleeping, causing him to comment "I therefore name this isolated and remarkable feature Swan Hill". A bluestone cairn commemorating his visit is located in Riverside Park. The area also boasts a visit by famous explorers Burke and Wills in 1860, with Australia's largest known Moreton Bay Fig tree still standing as a memorial.

Established over 30 years ago, visitors are invited to step back in time and visit Swan Hill's Pioneer Settlement - "where the good old days never really ended". As one of Australia's leading Heritage Parks, this township has authentic buildings, artefacts and agricultural equipment depicting the period between 1830-1930. Visitors will be thrilled by the township set on the Little Murray River, the Paddleboat "Pyap" and the beautiful night time "Sound & Light Tour". The Settlement caters for school and coach tours with Lodges accommodation, education programs and a wide array of shops, entertainment and attractions.

The historic Tyntyndyer Homestead built in 1846 is just 17km from Swan Hill. One of the oldest brick veneer homesteads still standing in Australia, with a colourful history, the property is now open for tours. The name, originating from a local aboriginal tribe, means "the flight and twitter of birds". An authentic collection of Aboriginal artefacts found on the property is on display.

The impressive Murray Downs Homestead is a gracious Victorian style mansion furnished with original fittings and open for guided tours. Now set on 150 acres, the station was originally part of a 178,000 acre property. 2km across the bridge from Swan Hill in New South Wales, the homestead features delightful English gardens and a superb Australian art collection.
