Introduction - History of Broken Hill - Films Produced in Broken Hill

 

 
 

Priscilla Queen of the Desert filmed in 1994 was one of the biggest Australian made films to break into the box offices globally. The film is a comedy about three drag queens that go on a road trip to Alice Springs where they have been invited to perform.

There was extensive filming in and around Broken Hill and include locations such as All Nations Hotel, Marios Palace, Mundi Mundi Lookou, Pinnacles Road, Stevens Creek Hotel and the town village of Silverton located 25km outside Broken Hill.

Broken Hill Argent Street with Priscilla

Max Max 2 is the sequel to the low budget hit movie Mad Max that launched Mel Gibson’s career filmed in 1981.  Mad Max who is a former police officer is a lone wanderer whom after a nuclear war travels through a devasted Australia looking for petrol. He discovers a population of people running an oil refinery who he must protect from a biker gang.

Parts of this movie where filmed in and around Broken Hill these places include Silverton (Which is located about 25km outside of Broken Hill and has a population of only 50 people.), Broken Hill itself and The Pinnacles.

Mad Max Road Broken Hill

Race The Sun is a 1996 movie starring Halle Berry and James Belushi about the Solar Wind Challenge. The film is roughly based on the Konawaena High School entry in the 1990 Solar Wind Challenge event where they finish 14th ahead of many commerical big budget teams aganist all odds.

Part of the movie features Argent Street in Broken Hill.
